Mission Possible

Okay, so today was our 3 mile tempo run. I had said yesterday, last night, that I wanted to finish in 27 minutes. I can definitely say mission accomplished!! We all completed the tempo run in under 27 minutes!! I finished in 25:13, Richard finished in 25:21, and Susan finished in 25:41 to be exact!! OH MY GOSH!! I have done the impossible! Well, maybe not impossible, but something I never thought I could do!! I mean really, 3 miles at an 8:30 pace? I remember not so long ago looking at the training schedule and laughing, almost to the point of histerics, thinking "Yeah right, Mrs. 13:30, social running queen will never be able to do this!" I think the only time in my life that I have run faster was when I had to run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes for volleyball at TCU. I don't even think I did it then. I wasn't a clock watcher I just knew I couldn't afford to be last since I was a walk on. I am still in shock, 3 hours later. I was able to slip into that place where everthing feels good, no matter how fast you are running!! My breathing was calm and relaxed. In fact I didn't feel out of breath until our walk break!! I was totally in the zone!! How cool! I changed my music on my MP3 player, but only listened to 1 song the whole time!! I just kept repeating it. Poor Susan got sick during the run and kept going!! What a warrior!! She is awesome!! Richard made the comment that his hair has a new part (because we were running so fast). This is particularly funny because he is bald and shaves his head. I can say I will be walking around with a smile today!! I plan to go to yoga this morning and then lead a stretching and yoga class tonight from 8-8:30. So if any of you need some down time to relax and reflect, come on in!! I will be waiting for you!!

**Recovery is the name of the game today!! My protein intake is going to be up. A quick note about protein vs carbs. Carbs turn into glucose which enters the "Krebs Cycle" (I could go into this but it is long and drawn out, but think of it as your metabolic motor engine). Once the glucose enters the Krebs cycle, it is immediately converted to and used as energy. If you take in too much glucose and don't exercise or expend the excess glucose it is turned into fat (weight gain). If you don't take in enough, you starve your major organs of energy needed to maintain daily function. This is why low carb diets don't work. You starve your brain and other organs of the energy it needs and you fail. Protein, once it enters the body it is broken down and the first place it goes is to any areas that need to be repaired (muscle recovery). If there are not any areas that need to be repaired then and only then can it be used for energy. If you don't have enough carbs in your system there are areas that need to be "repaired" and the protein will fill that void. If you take in too much protein your body will get rid of it, through urination. If the protein levels are rediculously high, you stress your kidneys. This leads to horrible problems (kidney infections, UTI's, Ketosis, and other major problems). So along with an adequate amount of carbs, I am going to make an atempt to up my protein intake to repair my legs and other damaged areas from this weekend!! (Namely my arms and back).
**I think I might do a cardio session tonight. If you are interested, see you at 8 in the aerobics room.

Running Log

Well this morning was gorgeous. I think it was 75 degrees or so. We started off a little rough. Susan's stomach was rebeling. After our first interval I noticed that I felt great again. How can this be possible? I have so horrible for like 3 months, and now 2 weeks in a row I feel great? Why question it, we have trained very hard and it should feel good. We set out to run 21, ended up timing 15.5 and completing 18. Does this sound strange? We don't usually time our warmup which these days seems to vary from very little to 2 miles or so. I had clocked the 15.5 in the same time as last weekend. Consistancy is always good. I felt great but blistered again. My big toe will not heal!! This is getting very irritating! Hopefully it will get better soon!! I can't wait to run next weekend!! It is a short 10 mile run!! I plan to do it in way under 2 hours!! We, Kevin and I are going to Austin to see my brother in law and my best friend, Manda. It is her birthday. I love going to Austin. Everytime we go I always come back saying that I want to move there. Who knows, maybe someday we will move there. Anyway, I am excited to try the tempo run on Wednesday!! I know it will go well. I will push through the fatigue. I will be awesome. I know it will!!

Life is too short!!

I have been saying this literally FOREVER!! Today further confirms my belief that life is too short to not shake your booty!! I was at the fitness conference today, loading up on a ton of ideas, and an instructor stole my motto right from my mouth!! If the music makes you want to shake it, why not go ahead and shake it? You know you ALL do this at home when know one is looking!! I am starting to believe that if you shake it on a regular basis you might just lose some weight. Follow me on this idea: You don't need any equipment (heehee), it doesn't matter what size you have or what shape it is in, it makes you laugh (not the looks or your opinion of your booty, just the act of shaking it), which in turn makes you feel good. When you feel good, you go out of your way to show it off (the fact that you feel good, not your booty). Now that you feel good and want to show it off you are motivated to work hard so that you might want to show it (your booty) off. You get my idea? I love to dance. I am a white girl with no rhythm, but that does not stop me from shaking it!! My husband tells me I often look like Elane (from Seinfeld) trying to dance. I personally don't think so, but nonetheless I still shake it!! Also, I met my husband in a dance club, so I must not look too bad shaking it!! So come on everyone, find a nice groove (music) and shake it!! Laugh hard and love yourself!! Who the heck cares what you look like, or the fact that you may not be able to keep rhythm shake your booty anyway!!

By the way this is not proven research. Hahahahaha, as if you could not already tell that!!

Also, I am thinking of offering a 30 minute cardio session one night a week. I have been doing this on my own and have loved it. I have been doing kickboxing just for extra cardio. Let me know if anyone is interested in coming in with me. I am not "clocking in" for this and therefore want to keep it as flexible as possible. I want to be able to change it up as often as possible or not change it up as often as possible. If I don't want to k-box and want to walk then I don't want it to be a big deal. Maybe we cycle for 30 min. or do light yoga for 30 min., or I don't know, something else for 30 min. I hope who ever comes in wants to be as flexible and creative as I am. If you are looking a ton of structure this may not be for you!! If you want to join me, let me know. I will give you details of where and what time to meet. I don't want to post it, too many cookey people out there. I am thinking mid week though!! It is okay if you ask while I am training a client, just don't linger.

I went to watch the Marcus Volleyball team play tonight and although they lost I was so proud to watch the seeds I have planted grow!! All at once, ahhhhhh!! Hahahaha!! It is now very obvious that I am in the wrong field!! I should not be in the clinical area of what I do, I should be in education and coaching. Every year (or at least the one's that end on a sour note such as this past one did) I say that I don't want to coach any more. When really I am so wrapped up in what is going on that I can't see how hurt I am and how badly I want to coach. I walked in the gym tonight and that was all I could think about. I think that God has been telling me this all along. I have just chosen to ignore him. With recent developments in my current position as an exercise physiologist, I am coming to the conclusion that a door is closing and I am being forced to listen. For those of you that don't know, I have been playing around with this idea that I want to coach for oh about 4 or 5 years. I ignored the urge after completing an internship with the University of North Texas Volleyball team. I was so worn out at the end of the season, but all I could think about was what we were going to do during the off season. Due to budget cuts I did not get to return for my 2nd year of the assistantship. I put the idea to coach professionally away and decided that club coaching was enough and that I should try to go for something in the clinical field. And now here we are, 4 years later and all I want to do is coach. I should have gone with my gut. I am going to take steps toward doing this. I am going to have to work my way up. I am not going to just be given this job, I will have to earn it. (And I mean earn it--nothing against 8th graders, that is what age I took to Kentucky--but really start all the way over? You betcha!!) I can do it, I will do it. I am really excited by this idea of going back to school and becoming a teacher and coach!!

Trees!

Okay, I know we are all upset about the trees in front of the Y being gone, but I will get in serious trouble (like lose my job at the Y for speaking against the plans of the new director or any of the directors for that matter), if you guys tell them or ask them about a petition!! I am not starting any petition, just wanted to share with you all my feelings on the matter. If you should feel compelled to share your feellings on the matter on your own please ask the girls or guys at the front desk for a comment card. Fill it out and give it back to them. Please don't mention my name or anything about me on the card. I appreciate the response from you guys, but really...don't tell them it came from me!
Thank you!!

**There is not enough time during the day to eat as much as I should!! I worked in Garland, stopped by Central Market to get fruit, came home to grab something to go, and headed to the office to drop equipment off. By the time I was done with all of that, it was time to go train my fave clients!! (All of you are my faves!!) It is now 9:15pm and I haven't eaten enough. Oh what a horrible problem to have. Hahahahaha!! I am going to grab a handful of peanut butter covered pretzels (I have no idea how many calories are in them) and head to bed!!
**Sleep is good!! I slept in this morning until like 9:30!! Wow, I can't think of the last time I slept this late!! I am so blessed that I have a job that allows this kind of lifestyle!! I really needed the rest!! Oh, last night I ate a snack (1 cup dry cereal). I was hungry. I should go put it in yesterday's log, but oh well! I am ready to conquer the world today!! I have one test today (in my 2nd least favorite spot--Garland). I get to deal with people who are arrogant, rude, and never know when and where I am supposed to go. I hate that place. I suppose it's a fair trade, since I get to train all of my favorite clients, run in the middle of the day if I want, and get to sleep in. I plan to workout this afternoon. I will be doing 30 minutes of cross training and weights! I will let you know how it goes later!

684 cal. burned during run this morning. Walked Nikko very slowly and very short. I was hot and tired. All of this = short walk.

Tempo Talk

Well, we did it. Richard and I met at 5:00am in the usual place to do the usual thing, run fast! It started off hot. I felt great to begin, then suddenly became very aware of how tired I am. I am greatful for Richard who always keeps me on track, as I complain and tell him at mile 2 that I have nothing left to give in my legs. He says, "Ohhhh, I don't think that is true, let's keep going." In my mind I groan (at least hope it was only in my head), and keep going. We started off very fast, clicking mile 1 at 8:34 (minutes:seconds), mile 1.5 at 13:25, mile 2 19:something, and mile 3 at 36:00?? You may ask, what happened. Well, we climb this hill I dread everytime I see it and my legs are shot. We shuffled on to the turn around and at this point my shoelaces are even exhausted. I tied my keys to them and they wouldn't stay tied. Thankfully there is Richard, who just says I will take them for you. I laugh now to think that I was such a pill this morning. I have not fully recovered from the 17.5 mile run on Sunday. It shouldn't take a brain surgeon to figure this one out, but we marathoners refuse to face the truth. There is this moving target we are always striving for. We talked today about this balance of having effort to give and holding back compared to having nothing left to give because there is just nothing there. What an illusive idea. It sounds sort of like talking in circles. I wanted to give everything I had today, and I did. We finished the 5 miles in a snail pace of 12 minute miles (about 2 minutes per mile longer than I wanted to finish). I am momentarily angry because I look at my watch to see 1 hour. It is like my watch is laughing at me these days, saying you won't ever look at me and be pleased with your time. This is of course only Satan giving me self doubt. I push him and it away just as quickly as I heard him. When I am very tired or fatigued, I am more likely to pay attention to what he has to say. I decided that there is not enough time for that garbage. There are too many things I have to do today. If I listen, I will end up frustrated, unmotivated and very sad; not to mention on the couch for the rest of the day. I am a phenomenonal woman who is capable of doing anything I set my mind to, even if it seems unrealistic at first. I have to keep my eyes on where I want to go and the rest will follow. I believe that. We also talked about these friends of Richard and Diane (his wife) who are the metaphysical types. (Not like hippies, but spiritual in a different way). They believe that the universe always will tell you yes. If you go into something with self doubt and a negative attitude, then the universe will say yes. If you say that I am not going to be successful at running, losing weight...(you fill in your own blank) then the universe will agree with you. It is like a self-fulfilling prophesy, only with a metaphysical twist. So today and the days to follow I will think about this as I groan to get up in the morning and think what am I doing this for? I have a purpose. I will achieve and carry out the plan God has set before me and not listen to the white noise of Satan that is at times very loud. With the help of my dear friends and a whole heck of a lot of grace I will achieve all of the things I dream of.

Does anyone have any size 5'8" legs I might be able to borrow? Mine are shot. I had a very difficult time getting up this morning, and as I sit here blogging, I think I might fall asleep!! I am surprised at HOW fatigued I am. I plan to rest today in preparation for the tempo run tomorrow!! I might do light weights, Upper body only, later today. I did walk Nikko, but even she seemed very sluggish today! It must be the heat. I can't believe how hot it is. I think it was 101 degrees yesterday and it is going to be the same today! Hot, hot, hot!!
Did anyone notice that there are fewer trees in front of the Y? I am very saddened by this. I realize what the new director is trying to do. He wants everyone that drives by to notice the Y. I am inclined to think that in New York, where he is from, they don't like to breathe clean air!! We need those trees!! Maybe they will be planting new ones further from the building!! If this bugs you as much as it bugs me, please fill out a comment sheet at the front desk at the Y and place it in the appropriate box or ask the kind people at the front desk where to put it.

My walk this morning was quite enjoyable (is that a word?). I was very aware of my surroundings today. I have been told that we have some wildlife in my area. There have been several sitings of coyotes (how do you spell that? I should look that up, oh well) and bobcats. Just this morning a gentleman mowing his yard told me that just before I came around the corner a coyote just ran across his yard. I did not see it, unfortunately. I love wildlife. I noticed a few things this morning on my walk. First, I love the smell of trees and dirt. Odd as it may seem, I just do. It reminds me of camping. And I LOVE to go camping. There is this one area around my apartment where there are a lot of trees and I look forward to walking through there everyday. It is always cooler over there and it smells good. The second thing is that although I hate crickets, (I don't like to see them or feel them jump on me--I am terrified of that) I love the sounds they make. It was like a wonderful concert was being played just for me as I walking through the trees. Maybe it wasn't all crickets, but at any rate I loved the sounds I heard this morning. I am left feeling very appreciative of the small bit of wildlife left in Lewisville. There should be more of it. Too bad progress has no room for nature.
**Ran 3 miles in around 33 minutes (360 calories burned). Legs are very tired. I thought they were okay, but they are not. They felt all rubbery.

Please forgive me, for I have not blogged!!

Hello everyone!! I am very sorry I have not blogged in a while!! I am getting back on track right now!! This morning I was greeted with a blarring alarm clock at the insanely early 3:40am!! We must be insane...who else gets up this early to run? Not anyone else I know, oh yea except my dear friends Susan and Richard. Although we did not run with Richard, nor did we see him this morning. Slacker!! Heheheeee!! I was in charge of freezing the water and electrolytes and delivering them to their appropriate spots and be back at Susan's promptly at 4:30am. Yeah right!! I actually had no idea that it would take about 45 minutes to put water out. Anyway, we started around 5am. Too late, I was afraid. It was a rough start, neither of us wanted to actually run this morning. But then who does want to run at that hour? Some of you may be saying, who wants to run period!! After a sluggish start we decided to change our intervals and rotate them so that we end up with a bit more walking. We started with 8:2's and later started rotating them with 5:2's. It was hot from the very begininng. I keep telling myself that if God leads me to it, (heat), then he will see me through it. I actually started feeling good this morning. I was fearful of the heat, but pressed on. I am thinking along the way: WOW, what did I do yesterday to make today feel so good? I am stumped. I felt great though. In fact I did not start feeling bad until I got to Universal Academy on Waketon. The heat was taking it's toll on me!! I was pleasantly distracted though by the balloons. Did you guys know that there was a balloon festival going on? I think maybe I did, but then forgot about it. Funny thing about being tired, you do things without even thinking about it. For instance, all of the fluids I had taken in were demanding to be released. I had to pee and was not going to make it home. Something you all should know about elite runners (I am not putting myself in this category) is that they don't stop to pee. They just go in there pants!! How disgusting!! I cannot and will not ever reach that point!! YUCK!! Anyway, as I was peeing in a not so discreet spot, I noticed a car sitting not too far away. I had just relieved myself in front of a car with a family in it!! Oops!! Well, as the old addage goes, "you gotta do what you gotta do". I can't believe I shared that story. Oh well, forgive me I am human!! Anyway, I cut my distance to 17.5 instead of 19 miles due to the heat. I think it was 90 by 9:00am. Too hot for me. Susan drudged on. You go girl!! I wanted to finish with energy left over and with a hunger to run again!! Well, I achieved that goal today!! I am excited to run again!! I finished the 15.5 (we walked the first 2) in 3:30 (a stellar 13:30 minute mile pace). Looking back after I have recovered a bit, I could have done better. I am in no way disappointed. Actually I am pumped that I feel like I had the ability to go faster and farther. The original goal was to finish today. We achieved both. I plan to keep my eyes fixed on my goal and I know that the rest will follow!! Next week is an even longer run!! I hope to feel this good again!!

Workout this morning was a 4 mile tempo run. Goal: 36 minutes (9 minute mile). Reality: 40 minutes (10 minute mile). A few things happened today during this run, first it was further confirmed that Texas is not a place to train for a marathon, second we went out too fast, and third I charged a hill I had no business charging. All resulting in a slower pace. I struggled to catch my breath and get to "the place" I was in last week. Disheartening, but not all that bad. I am not disappointed. I am very tired. Today has been busy. Sorry, Candi I have not had a chance to get together ideas for you!! These are coming, probably on Friday. Tomorrow I have 4 tests in 2 different places, so I will most likely not get to it. I am sorry, but it is coming!!

Running Log

Gimmee a B, Gimmee an O, Gimmee a N, Gimmee a K...What does that spell? BONK!! I am going to put the most positive spin on the joke of a training run we had this morning!! Bonk means in a scientific sense that I had depleted my glycogen stores completely. I stopped burning stored fat and began burning muscle. In 2 words, NOT GOOD!! The run started out okay. We were faced with lightening and fierce humidity. We were not sure if we were going to make it through the run with out rain or not. We decided to press on anyway. Since the two of us (Susan and I) had taken some time off, we thought it would be smarter to start with a shorter run 13 instead of 19miles. We walked the first 2, then began running. I knew that it would be tough today, but I did not know how tough. We pressed on. It was very hard from the very beginning. I stopped about 3 miles from home and sat down to rest. Realizing that I have bonked, I am frustrated!! I did not eat enough yesterday, drink enough today, and sleep enough last night. All of this adds up to a disaster of a run!! I am discouraged, but not completely defeated. Although my ego is without a doubt taking a beating. I know I can run 26.2 miles right now, but I know I could not do it in the time I want. I called Kevin looking for encouragement on my 3 mile walk home. He gently reminded my that I am a good runner, and that I should press on. I will heed his advice, because I agree. With time, tremendous effort and a little grace from God, I will achieve everything I am striving for. I will remain positive and realize that I am blessed with the ability to run and will do so with an attitude of gratitude.

Workout this morning was pretty good. I am tired. I can feel it in my legs. We, Susan and I, did the Star Track Eliptical (30 minutes; 304 calories). We did weights (125 calories). Nikko and I went for 2 walks today (40 minutes and 20 minutes). Overall a good day. I tested patients today. I know you may be thinking, oh my gosh, Karrie actually had to work today. That's what my husband always says. Haha!! I must say I think I have wasted more time watching reality tv for way too long. We have been watching Hooking up. I am so thankful I am happily married to a wonderful man. We are so fortunate.
I wanted to post some before pictures for motivation!! I can't believe I am going to do this, it is so embarrasing, but if it will motivate you all, I will post them!! Coming Soon: a blog on Snacking and How much should you be eating?? I will let you know.

Workout this morning was wonderful. Richard and I met at 5am to do a tempo run. For those who don't know what a tempo run is, it is a run done at a faster than usual pace. We normally run about a 10:30 pace. We completed the 3 mile run averaging just over a 9 minute pace. That's right you read that right, 27:56. I was so excited. It was so good. I had a very spiritual run. It was weird. I was hearing my MP3 player, but not listening. I remember repeating a couple of songs (Chevelle and Black Eyed Peas), but not really ever listening to them. I was in a very meditative state. Almost like I was unconscously running. I was never winded, or tired until near the end. It was wonderful!!. My spirit is renewed and I feel great!! I can't wait until the Elvis Run this weekend!! I know it will be wonderful. It is funny how and when your prayers are answered. I have been praying for a calm spirit and peaceful mind. My anxiety was lifted during my run. I find such peace and calmness when I run. It is my time to get connected with the spirit.
I finished the evening with a 40 minute bout with a kickboxing bag. I have not done that in a while. It felt good to beat up on a punching bag. Such a release. I wish there were more classes that I could take. For now I am just blessed that I can go to the aerobics room and use the bags there.

Farewell, Old Friend

I have had a very rough weekend! Putting Dita down was the hardest thing I have experienced in my adult life so far. She has been my best friend for the last 15 1/2 years. My heart is breaking. I know that it will get better with time. Nikko, the yellow lab, dearly misses her buddy. She seems a little lost with out her friend. Today is the first work day at home without Dita. It is hard to come home and not see her. I know with out a doubt that we did the right thing. It was and still is very hard. I have gone from eating nothing to eating to eating everything. Today is the first day I have worked out since last Friday. I did not run on Saturday. We, my family and I, went SeaDo ing. My arms and back are sore. Nikko and I went for a long walk today, to stay distracted. I did do weights this morning and plan to get back on track on with everything this week!! I will miss my Dita very much. Farewell my friend.
